Getting Started

How do I participate in the forums?
You are entirely welcome to browse the forums as a guest, however, in order to start a discussion or reply to a post, you must first be a registered member of facingcancer.ca.
Membership is absolutely free and only requires a one-time registration.

How do I register?
To register on facingcancer.ca, simply click on the “Join” link located on the top navigation and fill out the necessary information required. Or you can click on “Register” from the forum pages. Your registered e-mail address will never be visible to other forum members, though your e-mail address will be visible to the forum administrators in case they need to contact you for any reason.

What is a username?
When you register, you must choose a unique username or “handle”. This is the name that will appear every time you post and will be the name that other members will get to know you by. This enables you to remain anonymous if you choose. However, you have the option of allowing your real name to appear on your user profile.

Why is gender a required field when I register?
Because women on facingcancer.ca may talk about highly personal things such as sexuality or relationship issues, we think our site is safer when women know they’re talking to a man or talking to a woman. We absolutely encourage men to register and share their experiences — and help create a supportive community for all.

What is my profile?
When you register as a member of facingcancer.ca, we encourage you to fill out your profile. While not mandatory, your profile helps others in the community understand a bit more about you. Sharing your experience with cancer, your age, gender, location, and even a photo all help give a better picture of ‘you’.

How do I upload a photo?
In the “Upload Image” field when you first register, click on “Browse”. This will connect with the files on your computer where you can select any photo or image stored there.  Once you click “join now”, the photo will be uploaded to your profile.

Can I edit my profile?
You can add to or edit your profile at any time. Once you’re signed in, click the link “Your Profile” in the upper navigation on the main site or on the Forum, and then click on “Edit Your Profile”.

Signing In
If you are already a member of facingcancer.ca, simply click on the “Sign In” link located on the home page of facingcancer.ca or on the forum home page. Enter your username and password and click “Sign In”. And if you check the box “Remember Me”, you can skip this step next time you visit. At anytime, you can choose to log out by clicking on the “Sign Out” link on the home page.

How do I add a new topic?
Starting a new topic in the Forum is easy. If you want to start a new topic directly from the Forum Homepage, go to “Latest Discussions” and click underneath on “Add New”. Then give your topic a title and fill in the text of your post. Indicate which Forum category your post best fits in by choosing the appropriate one from the drop-down menu.

You can choose to upload an image from your computer at this stage as well. When you’re done, click “Send Post”. You can also start a new topic from inside any of the Forum Categories by clicking on “Add New” at the top.

How do I reply to an existing topic?
If you want to add your reply to a topic started by another member, simply go to the bottom of the topic page. Fill in your reply in the text box, upload an image if desired, and click “Send Post”.

Can I delete or edit a post I’ve already submitted?
Unfortunately, no, once your post has been submitted and is visible on the forum, you cannot delete it or edit it.  If you have a post that you wish to have removed from the site altogether, please use the “Report Abuse” link and give an explanation of why you would like your post removed.

What do I do with “Tags”?
Tags are like labels that help others know quickly what posts are about. When you start or reply to a post, you can help members identify the subject matter of your post by adding a tag. Simple tags like “treatment” or “depression” or “travel” help others find their way to posts that are relevant to them. You can choose several if you like. Just enter the tags in the tag field at the top of a topic. Separate multiple tags with commas.

What are “favourites”?
Some topics may be of particular interest to you and you’ll want to follow them. When you click on “Add this topic to your favourites”, that topic is added to your favourites in your profile. To follow up on all your favourite discussions, simply go to your Profile page and click on “My favourite discussions”. All the topics you have selected as favourites will be listed there for you to follow easily.
